I bounced around to all sorts of systems and DEs and came to this same conclusion. Debian + KDE is where it all ended up after try easily over 20 different systems throughout the years.

It’s the most “we trust you, but also respect your time” combo I’ve found.

Honestly, I’ve always gone to a retail store if quality is a concern. Name brand SanDisks have literally never failed me. Just make sure you get at least U3/A2 class for speed.

This is where I am. There are a lot of fancy features that modern graphics cards have that I want to make sure work with all my AAA titles. I have a Linux laptop for near everything that isn’t a game.

I know there’s a lot of people on Lemmy that feel differently, but I am a bit of a bleeding edge graphics whore. I like my raytracing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I want to throw Unihertz a shout-out. I only have the JellyPhone for its novelty, but as far as devices go, it does all the things an Android phone should, even with the silly form factor. It being stock Android is a big plus as well

Yeah, I agree. Browsers all seemed to act like they are the only thing running on the computer at some point, practically resembling their own OS with the amount of containerization and complexity. There should definitely be a way for the OS to request some RAM be released from the browser.

There’s also the idea that free RAM is somehow a good thing. In an ideal system, the RAM would always be “full” of potentially useful data. Having a bunch of empty RAM means that it’s not being useful. That space could be used to hold plenty of regularly used files that would be instantly loaded instead of having to pull from the drive again.

I don’t know when everyone started getting concerned with RAM usage, but in a perfect system, it would hold onto all of your frequently used programs and files that it could fit from boot and then those would load instantly.

Some Linux distros even allow loading the entire OS into RAM for wild speeds.

Idle RAM is just that. It does you no favors. Now, I do understand that you don’t want to be completely out, but we act like having 80% free is a goal for some reason.

DEBATE ME

I hate that often Microsoft Teams is the only piece of software I can get to work for sharing a screen with the layman. Many cross-platform user-friendly options don’t work reliably on Linux, but by some weird twist of fate, I get it to work more often than anything else.

Yes, for an IT person’s own solution, you’d just use a VPN or something, but I’m rarely working with people that are technical enough for this.

Right on. I’ve moved onto a dirty iPhone since, but here’s a screenshot of my super old Android setup back from when Material was new. After Android took out all the fun stuff custom ROMs could do, I sort of fell out of love with Android.

I had a cool feature at one point where it started out looking like this and unlocking it would make the circle expand and the background would show in full.

Any time! I’m a graphic nerd with none of the book learning, but I do work at a screen printing shop, so I have some intuitive understanding of logo/icon design, but don’t have the theory to go with it.

In other words, I have wildly subjective opinions that I’ll randomly dig my heels in on. (Sometimes when I have no idea what I’m talking about ha!)
