Then the article goes on to say “Google is also working on…”

It’s clear from the article with basic reading comprehension that Google is working on multiple concessions here, one being a power user settings toggle to bypass verified APKs, and another for hobbyist developers to verify their APKs.

This is also ignoring the fact that ADB installs was never going away as part of this change. You could still run an ADB command to install an unverified APK, and that can be done remotely via a computer or via the various terminal apps available. Someone even wrote an app that does it for you.

But sure, carry on with the FUD and accuse me of “needing my hand held” using computers when you can’t even read and comprehend an article properly…

Where are you getting this from? The article makes it clear that the solution will be a settings-based solution similar to how it is today.

You probably need to update your phone as I think this is a recent change.

You can now have either a 2-wide quick setting which offers both a one-tap solution and the popup menu solution, or you can shrink it to 1-wide and just have it enable/disable Bluetooth.

When I tap it on my Pixel 7, it enables/disable Bluetooth instantly. How much faster than instant do you need your Bluetooth status to change?

I’ll give it a go. What personal data are you collecting (as per the Google Play Store listing)? Why does a meal planner need to collect personal data anyway?

If that happens (and it’s a big if, they’re not taking adb away any time soon) I’ll just use the fancy new Linux environment that Pixels have and script a way to open up YouTube from within that. Since it’s my own Linux environment I can have adblock installed. No worries.

I dunno, you’re the one claiming stuff that isn’t necessarily true (yet). This is a proposed update to Google Play Protect. You don’t have to have Google Play Protect enabled, and disabling it doesn’t really impact anything unless you’re the type of person to just download an apk from unverified sources.

The 6a is a four year old budget phone so of course moving to the S25 will be significantly improved…

Just turn off Google Play Protect and it’ll let you sideload whatever you want.

You can also just hold the power button to bring up the power menu which includes a Lockdown button. This disables biometrics and will require a PIN to unlock.

This should work on any Android device, but definitely works on my Pixel. The shortcut might be different for different devices, though.

Americans skipped adoption of Chip and PIN, and they were like a decade late with contactless payments. Their payment systems are laughably outdated.

Eh, when people say they’re ‘super invasive’ what they usually mean is that they can’t run it on their rooted android phone running LineageOS or have to go through various hoops to get it to work. Turns out, banking is pretty important to keep secure so yeah these apps will have checks in place to make sure you aren’t faking your location or using a modified APK that they can’t detect. I’m pretty happy with that restriction given the convenience of being able to manage payments etc in a decent-enough native app. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I doubt the banks in the UK have decent or even functional websites for mobile screens. I couldn’t really deal with the frustration of using a half-baked website for banking, given that most of the apps themselves are half-baked too.

Convenience wins for me, I’m afraid.
