Thank you, that was an interesting breakdown. I really appreciate his methodology. I’m going to deep dive into anything he has posted. Though he doesn’t come to the same conclusion I do, the takeaway is:

1. Yes, there is noticeable sound loss when converting a 24 bit sample to 16 bit.

2. You can really screw with a 24 bit sample and still have a listenable file, presumably because of the bit depth.

3. Recording and mastering in 24 bit benefits classical music reproduction, and I would argue, any acoustic music reproduction. So, anything with a vocal, drum kit, acoustic guitar, etc.

Since the video is about dither specifically, he does conclude that mastering to 16 bit gives the technician a sturdier product when played back on the myriad of modern equipment we have. It’s arguable, sure, but since this an audiophile sub…

That’s why I didn’t mention the sample rate. You aren’t going to get really anything back increasing to 96 khz. But I promise you increasing the bit depth leads to a noticeable change in the perception of the recording. You’re not going to get anything from modern pop since it’s compressed to hell and back, but find a good recording of an album you’ve listened to a lot and find some decent, wired headphones and try an A/B of a 16 and 24 bit mix. You’ll see what I mean.

Um, no it doesn’t. 16-Bit dynamic range is 96 decibels, 24-bit is 144 decibels. 96 cuts off quite a bit of an average person’s hearing range. A/B a 16 and 24 bit recording and you can hear it easily over even modest headphones.

Phone manufacturers know where you touch your screen the most often and put their shittiest apps in that spot so you accidentally engage. It’s the only reason I open up Google’s AI, because I did it by accident.

I have a dedicated windows 10 PC for gaming only. Microsoft is actively trying to brick my machine. I have to read the fine print to make sure I’m not agreeing to the 11 “update.” I feel held hostage - it sucks.

I’m thinking of going to steamOS - I’m a casual gamer that just needs it to work when I have the spare minute to fire up a game. I don’t have time to do much troubleshooting, but I will make time so I don’t get locked into a console. Shrugging emoji.

Pets help us understand our own mortality in ways that continue to surprise me. When I was young, the first pet I lost was a young cat, just a few years old. I raised her from a kitten that was probably too young to ween so we had a close bond. She was indoor/outdoor and was attacked by a neighbor’s dog during the day when I was gone. Holding her and watching her die broke me, like she waited all day to die in my arms. She was mine and I felt like I let her down. Woof, it hurt. Still does.

But while I was holding her, our family dog (Allison) was next to me. She was older than I was, a feisty Lhasa Apso that had lost her ability to hold her bladder. We diapered her: we’d cut a hole in human diapers to pull her tail through to keep the hardwoods from getting ruined. She died a year later, after living a full life.

I buried both of them in the front yard, under a couple of pines that bordered our neighbor’s pet cemetery. Both times, digging those holes gave me the time I needed to be able to return them to the earth and say goodbye. I learned so much from their passing. It is the last gift our pets give us, their final act of love.

Now, older, with kids of my own, we have Sadie, who I am looking at as I write this. She’s a rescue, probably a golden mixed with some border collie, at least 16 years old. Her sister died last year and it was the first close death my kids experienced. Her passing taught my kids the alchemy of aging gracefully, the privilege of old age. Now, they find charm in Sadie’s rickety hips and excuse her incontinence. Getting old is okay; we are lucky to be able to do it. Watching your loved ones get old is a privilege we should cherish.

I know what you mean, but I immediately heard it different. It’s something we should be asking daily, just to make sure they have what they need. Are trans women okay? Are trans men okay? What do you need? I have a sympathetic ear and bourbon; how can I help?
