Connery wasn’t beaten by anyone. He never liked the role and was happy to leave it.
He got creative control and a boatload of money for “Never Say Never Again” which was better than any Moore outing.

This was a mainstream TV show intro.
Goldman’s other works tend to get ignored. “Magic” and “Marathon Man” are incredible thrillers. Both were turned into excellent movies.
“Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid” was written by the author of “The Princess Bride.”
There’s a lot of Butch in Inigo, and a little of Sundance in Wesley.

I’ll give Moore credit for one thing.
He made the producers have Bond nope out of sleeping with a very young actress in one of his later outings.
And I’ll give kudos to Timothy Dalton. His movies were made in the middle of the ‘safe sex’ 1980s. He wasn’t allowed to smoke or sleep around. I think if he’d been given better scripts he’d have been a much better Bond than Brosnan .
