Porn aside they closed the issue for “piracy”?
Like, don’t get me wrong I understand downloading youtube videos isnt piracy but, you’re getting around the ads, which are a form of payment. Just seems off to me for this to be the hill you crash out on.
I’d say supporting youtube is a much more defensible position, and more importantly it is more worth bothering to. yt hosts enormous amounts of stuff available there and only there, while a piracy site basically by definition only has media taken from somewhere else (though not necessarily easily or at all available anymore ofc). they certainly support many gray area websites, too.
Edit: from the FAQ:
Why is there a rule against websites “primarily used for piracy”?
The short answer is that supporting piracy sites would in all likelihood result in the project being shut down. In the past, other similar projects have been shut down due to supporting piracy sites. The yt-dlp maintainers are of the position that supporting such sites is not worth the risk.
Ok but what if it was a similarly designed website except it’s not used for piracy?
yt-dlp is throwing 403 errors so I checked the github…
It may be youtube movikg parts around to fuck with ytdl, will be fixed after an update
What’s really irritating is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to download videos from yt which have an age restriction, even with Cookies
--cookies-from-browser firefox
(where I’m logged in ) always worked for me. be great if I didn’t have to bother thoWorks for most videos as well for me, but not for those were you actively have to click “I understand, continue” after getting a warning on maturity of a video.
There’s an open issue on the yt-dlp github repo as well
Ahh I guess I’ve never come across one of those
