So like the title says,I have my S23 on cell data and Firefox and Chrome say I’m in Florida when I’m actually I’m NY. I turned on location data, turned off ad block (I really don’t want to do that) and some other extentions amd did a restart. Any idea where I go next?
Edit/small update- I was in Connecticut yesterday and tried it again on cell data, it had me in Pittsburgh, so it’s something on AT&Ts end. I’d like to thank everyone for commenting, I appreciate it.
Go to geolocation.com. It will use typical geolocation data to locate your public IP address. If it is in NY, you have your answer. Mobile network providers assign your public IP address, and sometime geolocation services place them in the wrong location. Not much you can do about it.
Yeah, Geolocation.com says I’m in Miami.
How certain are you that you’re not actually in Florida?

Oddly enough, I had a co-worker try it on his android phone and his said Lauderdale Lakes FL. I suspect ATT is up to some fuckery
@Tugboater203 @throwawayacc0430 It’s just them moving the IP addresses they have around to other parts of their network. Nothing wrong with that. The companies that geocode IP numbers will update their databases eventually.
Websites don’t typically use the device location services.
I’m assuming that if you open up google maps, the GPS triangulated location shown there is correct?
Websites will determine where you are, typically, based of IP, but this is not always reliable. And especially on cellular, your IP will change every now and then.
That’s strange, if it’s consistently saying that.
Does it do the same thing whether you are in WiFi or cellular data?
You can check the dns settings to make sure they are set to automatic or manually set them to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Those are Google dns servers.
If neither option work, I’d be concerned that your data is being funneled through a vpn without your knowledge.
You might be able to check that by searching “what is my ip address” and use whatever website shows it. Write down what you see and then do it on the cellular connection. The ip address should be different.
If it is the same on both, then you might have your data going through a vpn located in Miami.
Please feel free to message me directly about either of these things.
When I connect to wifi, it’s correct and I’m located in NY. The IP in the About Phone tab matches the address in Miami
I should add, I just installed Android 15 a few days ago and this the first time I’ve been off wifi since then. Prior to that I had no issues.
Florida…???
(I’ll show myself out…) 😜
It blocks certain sites that aren’t available in some states.
Also since we’re here. Does anyone have a recommendation for a VPN? I’m creeping more and more towards protecting my privacy

When in doubt, backup and factory reset
