Every cell phone manufacturer has some interest in diversifying the operating systems. Because Google develops Android and sells its own cell phones, it has an unfair market edge. And now Google is threatening to filter out apps that it doesn’t like which makes the risk even higher.
So we can be sure all of the other major manufacturers of Android phones have considered if they’d like to support other distributions.
I’m not saying the information about Fairphone is wrong, but you shouldn’t assume it’s all as bad as they made it out to be. You’re reading a marketing pitch from one group that works with one vendor saying why another vendor isn’t that good.

You don’t actually need “perfect” security in the future, any more than you did in the past. Windows was not perfect, right? So stop looking for perfection. Instead, look for “good enough for 99.9% of the world”. And you can get that with many of the popular Linux distributions.
Basically, install a popular distro, and keep your software to whatever is in the package manager. Don’t install random shit manually. Don’t download random software from random websites. Don’t fuck with security settings unless you read up on the topic very thoroughly. Then you’ll be fine.
Visiting dodgy websites in itself isn’t as risky as you make it out to be. There are very few exploits in an updated version of Chrome or Firefox that would compromise your machine.

The last sentence doesn’t follow from everything before it. You could have said that it increases some risks, but decreases other risks. That would have been accurate.
And this is the point, right? Many people want to use alternative operating systems on their phones so that they aren’t vulnerable to Google itself. This itself is a massive reduction of a certain type of risk.
It’s important to bring in the longer history. Before large numbers of Americans were reliant on rising housing prices, there existed these things called pension plans, which would pay out from when you retired until when you died, and you could live on that money. But the capitalists didn’t like that, because they didn’t want to pay people for doing nothing over the last few decades of their lives. So then we got the current system, which has people speculating on property and throwing money into IRAs. In other words, we had a system with guaranteed benefits and we replaced that with one based on gambling and the ridiculous belief that the value of property would always outpace inflation. And this all happened in our parents lifetimes, or in our grandparents lifetimes, depending how old you are.
