I recently got myself a new Motorola Edge 20 Pro, but after just one day, I noticed the battery was draining like crazy, even on standby. So, I decided to try a few things and holy smokes, they actually worked! Figured I’d share my experience here in case anyone else is struggling with battery life.
First off, I “recalibrated” the battery by letting it charge to 100% and leaving it plugged in for an extra hour as per Motorola’s support team’s advice.
Next, I manually selected my mobile network and disabled automatic network selection.
Then, I disabled background data for all the social apps like Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit, because honestly, who needs all those memes and shitposts loading in the background 24/7? Surprisingly, not many people know about this trick, and I’m wondering why I never tried it before.
Lastly I enabled developer options and disabled “mobile data always on”. This is said to be necessary for fast switching between wifi and data but i haven’t had any problem after turning it off.
Anyway, these tweaks made a huge difference in my battery life. Right now, I’m sitting at 70% with over 3 hours of screen-on time. So, if you’re having battery issues, give these tips a try!
Update: got some 8 hours of sot with 18% left. Pretty sure i’d get more battery life if i lived in an area with less crappy cell network coverage.

Do you know why this might help improve battery life? The way I see it, once you’re connected to a network, there’s no need to search for any others.
My guess is that he’s talking about switching between 5g and 4g.
On some phones the 5g modem is really inneficient and wastes a lot of battery life. Another reason might be that you’re located in a region with low 5g signal and it’s always trying to switch between that and 4g, which will also waste battery.
Oh yeah, that makes sense. And if you fix it on 4G, i.e. disable 5G, then that will also use less battery.
Exactly.
There’s a network switch setting where you can disable 5g network. Manual network selection is not required.
Not sure if this is a thing on other manufacturers but its a great feature born from Bixby (yeah the same Bixby everyone laughed at for some reason). I set up a Samsung Routine which during work hours automatically turns off wifi, turns on power saving mode & turns on bluetooth (for watch notifications). You can do so much with Routines but this one is so nice leaving work in the evening still having around 80% battery remaining.
Thanks for the tip, turned off background data for Facebook and Instagram since I rarely use them.
Thanks for the great tips.
Definitely will turn off background data for reddit and Twitter since they’ve made themselves redundant.
Hopefully I’ll get some more battery life out of this. Appreciate you.
Of course! I’d say you can do that with any app you only use in foreground occasionally. For me it’s just Telegram, Whatsapp, Slack and Outlook that need to be updated all the time because I use them for work and keeping in touch with family. I restricted background sync for the rest of installed apps.
I cannot disable
automatic network selection
, my device cannot find any network if I do.I can’t disable automatic network selection since i’m close to a border, but thanks for the tip for background data :)
